Liminal spaces
The term for a feeling too familiar
Liminal spaces are those that feel transitory. In anthropology, this concept of liminality is for those in a state of flux. That change can be physical, mental or social.
It’s when you’re at a ‘threshold’ – somewhere between the departure and arrival.
It’s a space of uncertainty and that usually means anxiety, loneliness and overwhelm. Our emotions, in this state, are heightened. We have no choice but to befriend the discomfort. It can also be a very transformative time where we start seeing things differently.
It’s paradoxical because of how uncomfortable it makes us feel but also how much growth, perspective and creativity it gives us.
